The Madras High Court on Wednesday rejected a petition by AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, challenging a lower court’s directive for a police investigation into allegations of falsifying information in his election affidavit. Justice P Velmurugan dismissed the appeal and emphasized that Palaniswami must cooperate with the police inquiry.
The controversy centers on accusations that Palaniswami provided incorrect details regarding his property holdings in his nomination papers for the 2021 Assembly elections. These allegations prompted a local court in Salem to order a preliminary investigation in April 2023.
Palaniswami, who represents the Edappadi constituency in Salem within the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, sought to overturn this decision through the High Court. However, with this latest ruling, the High Court has affirmed the need for a thorough investigation, reflecting the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
