In a significant development that could potentially alter the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh, the High Court has issued a notice to Khandwa MP, Gyaneshwar Patil, following a petition challenging his parliamentary membership. This move comes after a disappointing performance by the BJP in the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the party won 63 seats less than before, securing only 240 seats. Conversely, the Congress has emerged stronger, gaining 47 additional seats, totaling 99 victories.
The petition, filed by advocate Manoj Kumar Agrawal from Burhanpur district, alleges discrepancies in the election process that led to Patil’s victory. During a hearing held on Tuesday, the High Court not only summoned MP Patil but also the returning officer and other related parties to respond to the allegations.
Agrawal, who also contested the Khandwa seat as an independent, is representing himself in the case. The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 4. If the court rules in favor of the petitioner, it could lead to the cancellation of Gyaneshwar Patil’s tenure as an MP. In such an event, the seat might be awarded to Congress candidate Narendra Patel, who finished second in the recent election.

The allegations primarily focus on potential misconduct by the returning officer and other officials during the election, which, according to the petitioner, could have influenced the outcome in favor of the BJP candidate.
