Judges Not God- Allahabad HC Lawyers Will Not Address Judges as “My Lord” or “Your Lordship”- Bar Association Passes Resolution

Prayagraj, July 11, 2024: The Lawyers at Allahabad High Court continued their strike on Thursday, in pursuance to the call of the High Court Bar Association, Allahabad.

The High Court Bar Association has called strike in the Allahabad High Court, Prayagraj on various issues including the behavior of Judges towards Lawyers and not following the practice and customs of the Court.

In continuation of the Strike on Day 2, Today, at 12:00 PM, the Executive Committee meeting of the High Court Bar Association, Allahabad, was convened in the new office bearers’ room under the chairmanship of the President and senior advocate Mr. Anil Tiwari, and conducted by the General Secretary, Mr. Vikrant Pandey. 

The following resolutions were passed during the meeting:

Advocates to Cease Using “My Lord” or “Your Lordship”

1. Change in Addressing Judges: Advocates will no longer address judges as “My Lord” or “Your Lordship.” This decision follows a statement made by the Chief Justice of India, emphasizing that judges should not consider themselves as Gods. It was also decided to contact all Bar Associations across the state to address increasing incidents of misconduct against advocates in various courts.

Actions Against Non-Compliant Advocates

2. Disciplinary Actions: Advocates who have been issued show-cause notices for not complying with Strike decision must submit their explanations. Failure to do so will result in the termination of their Bar Association membership. This will strip them of benefits such as medical aid, assistance to dependents of deceased members, and priority in the allocation of new chambers. Those blacklisted will be permanently barred from future membership with the High Court Bar Association. Furthermore, advocates who participated in cases via video conferencing or in-person during the ongoing movement will have their memberships immediately revoked.

3. Strike Extension: In light of the current circumstances, the Executive Committee unanimously decided to abstain from judicial work tomorrow, July 12, 2024.
