High Court Orders Daily Medical Checks For Fasting Activist Sonam Wangchuk

The Delhi High Court on Thursday ordered government authorities to monitor the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis and provide immediate medical assistance if necessary. Wangchuk is currently on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.

A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia emphasized that every citizen’s life is invaluable. The court ruled that government doctors must regularly examine Wangchuk’s physical condition to ensure his safety.

The judicial directive followed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the court, which expressed deep concern over the fasting activist’s health.

Government Offers No Objection

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing both the central government and the Delhi administration, agreed that preserving human life is of utmost importance. Mehta stated that the government had no objections to conducting regular medical checkups for the fasting activist.

The bench welcomed the government’s cooperative stance, formally directing authorities to carry out daily health monitoring and implement any necessary medical interventions to protect Wangchuk’s life.

Protest Over Exam Irregularities

Wangchuk joined an ongoing demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 28, launching an indefinite fast that has continued since then.

The protest, which has been active for more than 25 days, is being organized by the Cockroach Janta Party. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing alleged irregularities in the conduct of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
