Dr. Vidyut Ranjan Sarangi Sworn in as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court

In a significant judicial appointment, Dr. Vidyut Ranjan Sarangi, formerly a senior justice at the Odisha High Court, has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi, presided over by the Governor of Jharkhand, C.P. Radhakrishnan, at 9:45 AM today.

Dr. Sarangi’s elevation to this prestigious position follows a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 27, 2023. Born into the esteemed Sarangi family of Odisha on July 20, 1962, Dr. Sarangi has an illustrious academic and professional background. He graduated in Commerce from BJB College, Bhubaneswar, and later achieved his LLB with honors, securing a gold medal from MS Law College, Cuttack, affiliated with Utkal University. Further enriching his legal expertise, Dr. Sarangi also holds an LLM degree and a PhD in law.

His legal career commenced in 1985, practicing at both the Odisha High Court and the Supreme Court of India. On June 20, 2013, Dr. Sarangi was appointed as a permanent judge at the Odisha High Court, where he has since adjudicated over 152,000 cases and authored more than 1,500 reported judgments.

Dr. Sarangi’s appointment as Chief Justice is seen as a step forward for the Jharkhand High Court, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a commitment to judicial excellence. His tenure as Chief Justice will continue until his retirement on July 19, 2024.
