Delhi Police Team Visits Justice Yashwant Varma’s Residence, Seals Area Where Burnt Notes Were Found

The investigation into the discovery of partially burnt currency notes at the residence of Delhi High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, has intensified. On Tuesday, a team of Delhi Police officials from the Tughlaq Road Police Station reached Justice Varma’s official residence to seal the area where the suspicious notes were found.

This development comes a day after a three-judge committee, constituted by the Supreme Court, visited the judge’s residence located in the Tughlaq Road area. The committee spent approximately 45 minutes at the premises, including inspecting the room where the burnt notes were recovered.

According to sources, the Delhi Police team, which included senior officers such as New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla, remained at the scene for about two hours. Acting on the committee’s recommendation, they sealed the specific section of the house where the fire incident and the discovery of notes had taken place. Officials from the Delhi High Court assisting the committee were also present during the operation, which was entirely videographed for official records.

Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the registration of an FIR against Justice Varma. The matter was mentioned before a bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, which agreed to hear the plea.

The petition questions the need for a judicial committee and demands that the investigation be handed over to the police. It argues that effective and meaningful measures are needed to tackle corruption at all levels of the judiciary. The petitioner further pointed out that had this incident involved a businessman instead of a sitting judge, law enforcement would not have hesitated to initiate a police probe immediately.

In response, the court advised the petitioner against making public statements on the issue and agreed to list the petition for hearing soon.
