Delhi High Court Round-Up for April 27

Important cases heard in the Delhi High Court on Thursday, April 27:

* HC set aside a Delhi University (DU) order debarring a Congress leader for a year for his alleged involvement in the on-campus screening of a banned BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying the action was taken in violation of the principle of natural justice.

* HC advanced the hearing on the bail plea of Vijay Nair, businessman and Aam Aadmi Party’s communication in-charge arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, but remarked that it amounted to putting pressure on the court.

* HC refused to extend the interim bail on medical grounds of liquor businessman Sameer Mahendru in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

* HC has restrained various rogue websites and internet service providers from copying, recording, displaying or releasing any stills, songs, audio and video clips related to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan’ without proper licence.

* HC has quashed the summons issued to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray by a court in Bokaro in an alleged hate speech case, observing faith and religion are more resilient and cannot be hurt or provoked by the views of an individual.

* S Gurumurthy, the editor of a Chennai-based Tamil news magazine, Thursday refused to file another affidavit in HC tendering an unconditional apology for his tweet against Justice S Muralidhar.

* HC sought the stand of the Delhi University on a petition by St Stephen’s College against the varsity’s notification insisting on admissions under minority quota solely on the basis of common university entrance test (CUET) scores, without any interview.
