Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had ignored nine summonses from the Enforcement Directorate and was arrested last night in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam, withdrew his petition from the Supreme Court on Friday morning. Kejriwal will now follow protocol and approach a lower court.
This move by the Aam Aadmi Party chief comes just hours after Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K. Kavitha’s petition related to her arrest in the same case was rejected by the apex court. Notably, the same bench that heard Kavitha’s case was assigned to hear Kejriwal’s plea.
Kavitha was advised to seek relief, including bail, from the trial court. The bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice MM Sundresh, and Justice Bela Trivedi declined to entertain the petition, stating that it could not permit individuals to directly approach the Supreme Court simply due to their influential status, such as being a senior political leader or Chief Minister.
