In a significant addition to the judiciary, the Calcutta High Court has appointed three new additional judges. On Saturday, the Law Ministry announced that advocates Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, and Om Narayan Rai have been elevated to the positions, enhancing the bench strength of the court.
Additional judges typically serve a two-year term before consideration for elevation to permanent judgeships. This period allows the judiciary to assess the contributions and capabilities of the additional judges in handling the complex and varied caseload of the high court.
The appointments come at a time when the Calcutta High Court, like many others across the country, is dealing with a backlog of cases. The addition of Judges Das De, Mitra, and Rai is expected to boost the judicial process and help in the timely delivery of justice.
