The Calcutta High Court is set to hear a petition on Monday from the parents of a doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The parents are seeking a further investigation into the incident, which has already led to a conviction.
The matter was brought before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh by the lawyer representing the victim’s parents, following guidance from the Supreme Court to approach the designated single bench of the High Court. The case is marked for an urgent hearing due to the parents’ plea for a more extensive probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently handling the case.
The crime occurred on August 9, and has since seen significant legal developments. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, was sentenced by the Sealdah sessions court to life imprisonment until natural death, after being found guilty of the rape and murder. However, the CBI’s investigation remains ongoing, with the victim’s parents asserting that other individuals were involved in the crime. They are pushing for these additional suspects to be identified and prosecuted.

Justice Ghosh, acknowledging the urgency and the complexities of the case, has ordered that notice be served to the respondents and confirmed the scheduling of the hearing for Monday. The lawyer highlighted that the Supreme Court had given explicit permission for the petition to proceed in the High Court, despite a related suo motu case still pending before the apex court.
