Bulldozers vs. Black Coats: Lucknow Demolition of Lawyers’ Chambers Halted After Fierce Qaiserbagh Protests

A high-stakes demolition drive targeting unauthorized lawyers’ chambers outside Lucknow’s civil court complex was abruptly suspended on Sunday morning after fierce protests by legal professionals escalated into clashes, forcing law enforcement to use mild force to disperse the crowd. The joint enforcement operation by the Municipal Corporation and district police—aimed at clearing encroachments in the Qaiserbagh area—provoked intense opposition, causing panic among local shopkeepers and prompting authorities to temporarily halt the exercise.

Confrontation at the Court Gates

The unrest began early Sunday morning when municipal demolition teams, flanked by district police, arrived at the civil court campus. Their objective was to dismantle several lawyers’ chambers constructed near the old High Court building and the civil court complex, which officials identified as illegal encroachments.

As word of the bulldozers’ arrival spread, a large crowd of lawyers quickly mobilized at the site. Heated arguments broke out between the protesting lawyers and administrative officials, with the legal professionals strongly opposing the removal of their chambers.

The standoff rapidly escalated, turning into a chaotic confrontation. To prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control and to restore order, police officers deployed mild force to push back the crowds. The sudden outbreak of tension sent waves of panic through the busy commercial area, forcing nearby street vendors and shopkeepers to hurriedly close their establishments and flee.

High Court Mandate Drives Cleanup Effort

According to administrative officials, the demolition drive is part of a larger, systemic effort to clear unauthorized structures and illegal encroachments that have cropped up in and around the court premises.

Kamlesh Kumar Dixit, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Lucknow, confirmed that several illegal structures were successfully dismantled during the initial hours of Sunday’s drive. DCP Dixit emphasized that the administrative action was taken in strict compliance with specific directives issued by the Allahabad High Court, which ordered the removal of these encroachments.

Demolition Halted as Authorities Seek Resolution

Faced with massive resistance and rapidly rising tempers, senior officials decided to temporarily suspend the demolition drive for the day to avoid further law-and-order complications.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, authorities have announced that a formal meeting will be held between administration representatives and members of the legal community. This dialogue will serve to discuss the concerns of the lawyers and plan the next steps of the enforcement action.

Currently, security remains highly elevated around the Qaiserbagh civil court campus to prevent any fresh flare-ups.

Despite the physical clashes and the police intervention, DCP Dixit confirmed that no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the protests so far. Furthermore, police officials noted that while force was used to disperse the crowd, no individuals have officially reported injuries arising from the clash. Law enforcement agencies continue to closely monitor the area, reiterating that all future operations will proceed strictly in accordance with legal mandates.
