Bombay High Court Justice Urges More Women to Join Mainstream Judiciary, Citing Need for ‘Sensitivity’

Justice Sharmila Deshmukh of the Bombay High Court has issued a call to action for women in the legal profession, asserting that the mainstream judiciary requires their specific leadership qualities and analytical skills to evolve.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 51st convocation ceremony of the TMC Law College on Saturday, Justice Deshmukh highlighted the shifting landscape of the Indian legal system. Addressing a cohort of 150 graduating students, she emphasized that the increasing presence of women in law is not just a matter of representation, but a fundamental necessity for a balanced legal framework.

Justice Deshmukh lauded the growing “footprint” of women in the legal field, noting that they bring a unique combination of professional rigor and empathy to the bench.

“Women today possess leadership qualities, analytical skills, and sensitivity, enabling them to play an effective role in the judiciary,” Justice Deshmukh stated during her keynote address. She further noted that as the profession evolves, “new opportunities are emerging,” and she urged the graduates to explore diverse avenues beyond traditional practice.

The Justice’s remarks come at a time when the Indian legal system is increasingly scrutinizing the gender gap within its higher echelons. By calling for more women to join the “mainstream,” she underscored the vital role that gender-diverse perspectives play in delivering justice.

The convocation also featured insights from Thane Principal District Court Judge S. B. Agrawal, who shifted the focus toward the professional conduct required of the new generation of lawyers.

Judge Agrawal cautioned the graduates against the temptation of rapid advancement at the cost of integrity. “Law is not just a profession but a medium of social service,” he remarked. He emphasized that long-term success in the legal field is predicated on three pillars: diligence, ethics, and a commitment to social responsibility.
