In a significant development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh surrendered to a special court in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday concerning a two-decade-old street protest case. Following his surrender, the court granted him bail on a surety bond of Rs 50,000.
The case dates back to 2001, where Singh was implicated for obstructing traffic and inciting violence during a protest in Sultanpur district. Subsequent to his conviction by the MP-MLA court on January 11, 2023, where he was sentenced to three months of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine, Singh had been challenging the verdict.
Sanjay Singh’s advocate, Madan Singh, informed the media that the bail was secured under the directions of the Allahabad High Court, which had recently on August 22, stayed the execution of the sentence initially awarded by the Sultanpur court.
This legal respite came after a non-bailable warrant was issued against Singh and five others, including Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Anoop Sanda, by the MP-MLA court on August 13. The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench, under Justice K S Pawar, mandated Singh to furnish a personal bond to ensure compliance with court proceedings, emphasizing the requirement for him or his counsel to be present during the revision petition hearings.
The case has seen several legal proceedings, including an urgent plea last year where the High Court had temporarily relieved Singh from surrendering until a detailed hearing on his bail plea, which was scheduled for the following day.
