The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of a plea seeking an early decision on the disqualification petition against 10 rebel Trinamool Congress MLAs, observing that the West Bengal Assembly Speaker was expected to act within the three-month period already fixed by the Court.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana noted that the prescribed period in the matter would end on October 10.
The petition was filed by TMC faction MLA Sohandeb Chattopadhyay, who had sought a direction to the Speaker to decide the pending disqualification proceedings expeditiously.
The Bench said it had every reason to believe that the Speaker was aware of the Supreme Court’s earlier decision and would make an effort to take an appropriate decision within the stipulated time.
Disqualification Plea Against 10 MLAs
Chattopadhyay had earlier moved Speaker Rathin Bose seeking the disqualification of 10 MLAs on the allegation that they had acted against the interests of the party.
While disposing of the petition, the Supreme Court did not issue any fresh timeline, relying instead on the three-month period already fixed for a decision in the matter.
