SC Collegium Recommends Appointment of Judges to Five High Courts, Permanent Status and Fresh Terms for Additional Judges

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended a series of appointments to five High Courts, including the appointment of advocates and judicial officers as judges, appointment of two Additional Judges as Permanent Judges and fresh six-month terms for six Additional Judges.

The decisions were taken by the Collegium at its meeting held on August 18, 2026.

Four Advocates Recommended as Orissa High Court Judges

The Collegium recommended four advocates for appointment as judges of the Orissa High Court. They are Sasmita Tripathy, Aditya Narayan Das, Rajjeet Roy and Gautam Misra.

Two Recommended as Gauhati High Court Judges

For the Gauhati High Court, the Collegium recommended Advocate Nchumbemo Mozhui and Judicial Officer Helen Dawngliani for appointment as judges.

Three Judicial Officers Recommended as Chhattisgarh High Court Judges

The Collegium recommended three judicial officers, Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar, for appointment as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

Justice Rohit Kapoor Recommended as Permanent Judge

Justice Rohit Kapoor, currently serving as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been recommended for appointment as a Permanent Judge of the same High Court.

Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury Recommended as Permanent Judge

The Collegium also recommended Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury, presently an Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court, for appointment as a Permanent Judge of the High Court.

Fresh Six-Month Terms for Six Calcutta High Court Additional Judges

The Collegium further recommended that six Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court be appointed as Additional Judges for a fresh term of six months.

They are Justice Prasenjit Biswas, Justice Uday Kumar, Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta, Justice Supratim Bhattacharya, Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi.
