Consumer Commission Orders Marriage Bureau To Refund Fee And Pay Compensation After Nine-Year Delay

A consumer disputes commission in Kerala has ordered a matrimonial agency to refund a registration fee and pay damages to a client after it failed to provide any suitable marriage proposals over a nine-year period.

The Kannur District Consumer Disputes Commission ruled against Sreechakra Marriage Bureau, directing it to return a registration fee of Rs 3,000, pay Rs 3,000 in compensation for mental distress, and cover Rs 2,000 in litigation costs. The ex parte order was issued on June 30 by a panel consisting of President Ravi Susha and commission members Molykutty Mathew and Sajeesh K P, following the agency’s failure to appear or submit a defense before the forum.

Under the terms of the ruling, the marriage bureau is required to settle the payments within 30 days. If the agency fails to pay within this timeframe, a nine percent annual interest rate will apply to the Rs 3,000 refund amount, calculated from the date of the order until the payment is completed.

Details Of The Complaint

The complainant, a professor at a nursing college, had approached the consumer forum seeking a full refund of his registration fee along with Rs 15,000 in compensation for mental agony. He stated that he had registered his biographical details with the agency in November 2016 after seeing an advertisement, paying a Rs 3,000 fee for a profile that carried no specified expiration date.

According to the complaint, the bureau initially promised to introduce him to a prospective bride from Kasaragod. However, after receiving the payment, the agency failed to arrange any introductions. The complainant alleged that despite keeping his profile active, the bureau repeatedly renewed its promises each year without ever delivering a single match.

In his petition, the professor highlighted that the agency’s prolonged inaction caused him significant emotional distress and financial loss, particularly as his elderly parents had been waiting for his marriage. His father passed away from cancer in October 2025, while his mother continues to suffer from poor health.
