The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on a petition by the Trinamool Congress challenging the freezing of its bank accounts, shortly after a private bank submitted a report detailing the funds held in three of the party’s accounts.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya rescheduled the hearing for Thursday after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Bidhannagar police, cited personal difficulties. Because of the adjournment, the court did not open the bank’s financial report.
The legal challenge was mounted by the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress, which is contesting the debit-freeze of its accounts. The submission of the financial report follows a July 2 directive from Justice Bhattacharyya, who ordered the private bank to disclose the exact corpus held in the three affected accounts.
Additional Accounts Frozen
During Wednesday’s proceedings, the political party’s legal counsel revealed that more bank accounts belonging to the Trinamool Congress have also been frozen.
Kishore Dutta, the advocate representing the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, informed the court of these newly frozen accounts and announced plans to submit a supplementary affidavit detailing them at the next hearing.
