Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking quashing of a criminal case registered against him in connection with alleged remarks about the film Kantara that were claimed to have insulted a deity.
The controversy stems from comments allegedly made by Singh during the Filmfare Awards event held in Goa while speaking about Kantara. According to the complaint, the actor allegedly mimicked a Daiva—a sacred spirit in the coastal Karnataka tradition—and referred to it as a “devil”.
Advocate Prashanth filed a complaint alleging that the remarks hurt religious sentiments. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru.
Police had issued notices to Singh in connection with the FIR. Sources indicated that, as there was no response from the actor, the High Grounds police recently initiated steps to proceed further in accordance with law.
Singh has now moved the Karnataka High Court seeking quashing of the FIR and the criminal proceedings initiated against him. The petition challenges the registration of the case arising out of the alleged remarks made during the awards function.
The matter is expected to come up for consideration before the High Court.
