The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to 80-year-old Rani Kapur, mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, on an application filed by her daughter-in-law Priya Kapur accusing her of making false statements under oath in an ongoing family trust dispute.
Justice Mini Pushkarna directed Rani Kapur to respond to allegations of perjury made under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and also sought her reply on a separate plea by Priya Kapur seeking outright dismissal of the suit filed by her mother-in-law.
Priya Kapur has alleged that Rani Kapur made “deliberate and false statements on oath” by denying having signed or read the RK Family Trust deed. The application claims that “unimpeachable documents”, including affidavits and photographs, show otherwise.
In addition, Priya has sought dismissal of the original lawsuit on grounds that Rani Kapur concealed material facts and misused the judicial process, thereby committing a “fraud upon the court.”
Rani Kapur’s civil suit, filed in 2023, seeks a declaration that the RK Family Trust—allegedly created in October 2017 and named after her—is “null and void.” She contends that the trust is based on “forged, fabricated and fraudulent” documents that were used to wrongfully deprive her of her rights, assets, and legacy.
Rani Kapur alleges that despite being the sole beneficiary of the estate of her late husband Surinder Kapur, the founder of the Sona Group of Companies, all her assets were transferred to the RK Family Trust through “a complex web of illegal transactions” orchestrated by her daughter-in-law and other defendants, in alleged collusion with her son Sunjay Kapur.
She further claims that Sunjay Kapur never provided her with a copy of the trust or disclosed that she had been divested of her estate.
The ongoing proceedings are part of a broader and bitter legal battle within the Kapur family. A separate plea filed by the two children of Sunjay Kapur and actor Karisma Kapoor, challenging the authenticity of their father’s purported will, is also pending before the high court. The children have accused Priya Kapur, their stepmother, of greed.
Sunjay Kapur passed away in June 2025 after reportedly suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during a polo match in England.
In an earlier hearing on February 10, the court had expressed concern over the familial discord and urged the parties to consider resolving their disputes amicably. “Don’t let the blessing of financial wealth become a curse,” Justice Pushkarna had remarked, calling the situation “sorry” and encouraging mediation.
The matter will be taken up again in March.
