Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Transfer of Justice Soumen Sen as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium, in a significant development, has recommended the transfer of Mr. Justice Soumen Sen, currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, to the Kerala High Court as its Chief Justice.

The recommendation was made during the Collegium’s meeting held on December 18, 2025. The decision comes in anticipation of the upcoming vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

The Collegium has proposed that Justice Soumen Sen be transferred from his current position as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court to take charge as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

This move is consequent upon the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, who is set to demit office on January 9, 2026.

Official Statement

The statement released by the Supreme Court Collegium reads:

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 18th December, 2025 has recommended transfer of Shri Justice Soumen Sen, Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya as Chief Justice, High Court of Kerala, consequent upon retirement of incumbent Chief Justice on 9th January, 2026.”

Background of Justice Soumen Sen

Justice Soumen Sen was born on July 27, 1965, in Kolkata. He completed his schooling at St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata, and obtained his LL.B. degree from the University of Calcutta. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal in January 1991.

During his practice, he appeared in the Calcutta High Court and other tribunals, handling Civil, Constitutional, Banking, and Arbitration matters. He was elevated as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2011. He later assumed the office of the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court in October 2025.

The recommendation is now subject to approval by the Central Government.
