Fact Check: Man in Viral Video from Delhi High Court Hearing is a Lawyer, Not a Judge

A video clip from a virtual hearing at the Delhi High Court, which has been widely circulated on social media, has become the subject of significant misinformation. The video, which captures a few seconds of a man in lawyer’s attire in a compromising position with a woman, has led to incorrect speculation that the individual is a judge.

The incident occurred during a virtual hearing on October 14 before the bench of Justice Jyoti Singh of the Delhi High Court. An examination of the video’s screenshot reveals that the confusion stems from the on-screen layout of the virtual proceeding. A sub-window displaying the text ‘Court of HMJ Jyoti Singh’ was positioned directly above the video feed of the lawyer in question. This placement has caused many viewers to mistakenly identify the lawyer as the presiding judge.

However, the facts clarify this misconception. Justice Jyoti Singh, one of the high court’s woman judges, was presiding over the matter, and her video feed was not active when the incident took place. The man seen in the clip was a lawyer who was one of several parties appearing before the court through video conferencing.

It remains unclear whether the lawyer inadvertently failed to switch off his camera or if his feed was added to the virtual courtroom by the court’s technical team by mistake. Regardless, the viral claims are a case of mistaken identity, as the individual involved is a lawyer and not the judge holding the court.
