MACT Awards ₹3.34 Lakh Compensation to Widow of Man Killed in 2008 Tamil Nadu Bus Accident

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Vasai, Maharashtra’s Palghar district, has directed the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) to pay ₹3.34 lakh as compensation to the widow of a man who died in a road accident in Tamil Nadu nearly 17 years ago.

MACT member H.A.S. Mulla, in an order dated October 1, instructed the corporation to pay the compensation with 6% interest per annum from May 26, 2010 — the date on which the petition was filed — until the amount is realised.

The case stems from a road accident that took place on November 22, 2008, near Ramnathapuram in Tamil Nadu. A TNSTC bus rammed into another vehicle, seriously injuring 62-year-old Dilip Bhoir. He was hospitalised but succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

The tribunal held that the accident was caused due to the rash and negligent driving of the TNSTC bus.

Bhoir’s widow had originally sought ₹1.5 lakh in compensation. However, the tribunal noted that she “failed to produce documentary evidence of the medical and funeral expenses besides her sworn statement.”

Despite this, it awarded a total of ₹3.34 lakh, which included previous settlements, and directed TNSTC to make the payment to the claimant.
