The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed the bail plea of former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain in the 2020 murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma during the northeast Delhi riots.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, while pronouncing the order, said, “the application is dismissed.”
The Delhi Police, opposing Hussain’s plea, described it as a “shocking case” involving the brutal killing of a young intelligence officer. According to the prosecution, Ankit Sharma was attempting to pacify the accused and urging them not to resort to violence when he was caught, dragged, and stabbed 51 times with a sharp weapon. His body was later dumped into the Khajuri Khas drain.

The prosecution said Sharma’s body was recovered on February 26, 2020, bearing multiple injuries, after his father Ravinder Kumar had reported him missing from February 25. Locals had informed the family that the body had been thrown into the drain near Chand Bagh pulia.
Hussain’s counsel argued that he has already spent more than five years in custody and that despite the trial court’s best efforts, the trial is unlikely to conclude soon. The trial court had earlier rejected his bail plea on March 12 this year.
The police have alleged that Hussain, along with four others, was part of a violent mob that indulged in rioting and arson, which ultimately led to Sharma’s death.
