Maharashtra Legislature Felicitates Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai

The Maharashtra legislature on Tuesday unanimously passed a congratulatory motion to felicitate Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on his elevation to the country’s highest judicial post.

The motion was moved in the state assembly by Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who hailed Justice Gavai’s appointment as a moment of pride for Maharashtra. “His elevation reflects the state’s long-standing contribution to the nation’s judiciary and governance,” Narwekar said.

Justice Gavai, who was born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003 and became a permanent judge in 2005. He was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Justice Gavai comes from a family with a rich legacy in public service. His father, R.S. Gavai, was a veteran politician who served as the chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and held gubernatorial positions in Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala. R.S. Gavai was also the founder of the Republican Party of India (RPI Gavai faction).

Justice Gavai’s appointment has been widely celebrated, especially as he is the second Dalit to occupy the top judicial office in India’s history.
