Allahabad High Court Issues Contempt Notice to Lucknow Police Commissioner for Non-Compliance

In a significant judicial intervention, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court issued a contempt notice to Police Commissioner Amrendra Kumar Sengar this Friday. The notice, also extended to another official, demands an explanation for their alleged failure to comply with a court order dated February 12, 2025, concerning the treatment and hospital visits of Ajay Singh, a convicted prisoner.

Justice Manish Kumar passed the order in response to a contempt petition filed by Ajay Singh. The court learned that despite specific directives aimed at ensuring Singh’s medical treatment, there were repeated instances where the police failed to provide necessary escort, thereby hindering his access to healthcare. Singh, currently an outpatient at KGMU in the orthopedics department, was supposed to receive regular hospital care as per the writ court’s directives.

The original court order stipulated that the police commissioner ensure the availability of a police force to escort the convict-appellant for necessary medical treatment at either KGMU, Balrampur Hospital, or any other designated medical facility. However, non-compliance by the police commissioner and others involved led to this judicial rebuke.
