In a solemn verdict delivered on Monday at the Sealdah court, Sanjoy Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment until death for the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. In addition to the life term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Roy, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial.
The tragic incident, which occurred in August of the previous year, involved the sexual assault and murder of the doctor while she was on duty. Despite his pleas of being wrongly accused, Roy was convicted on Saturday under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), reflecting serious charges including sexual assault and murder.
During the sentencing, Roy expressed to the court, “I am being framed, and have not committed any crime. I have not done anything and still, I have been held guilty.”
The court’s decision also included a directive for the state to provide Rs 17 lakh in compensation to the bereaved family of the doctor. The CBI’s legal representation had argued fervently for the maximum punishment, stating, “We pray for the highest penalty to maintain people’s faith in society.”
