Supreme Court Reiterates Openness to Direct Dialogue with Farmers Amid Punjab Protests

The Supreme Court emphasized its willingness to directly hear from farmers on Wednesday, following a report from the Punjab government indicating that protesting farmers, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal who is on an indefinite fast at the Khanauri border, are refusing to engage with a high-powered committee.

During the hearing, the Punjab advocate general, Gurminder Singh, informed Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan that despite repeated invitations, including one for a meeting on December 17, the farmers declined to interact with the state-appointed committee. Singh conveyed that the state has been actively attempting to persuade the farmers daily and proposed that they might consider presenting their demands directly to the court.

Responding to this, the Supreme Court stated, “We clarify that the court’s doors are always open to any suggestion or demand by farmers directly or through their authorized representative.” This statement underscores the court’s commitment to facilitating a resolution through direct dialogue if the protesting farmers choose this route.
