Indrani Mukerjea Petitions Supreme Court for Permission to Travel Overseas

Indrani Mukerjea, the former media executive embroiled in the high-profile Sheena Bora murder case, has taken her battle to the Supreme Court, seeking permission to travel abroad despite a recent denial from the Bombay High Court. Mukerjea’s petition follows a special court’s July 19 approval, which allowed her a 10-day travel to Spain and the UK over the next three months—a decision later overturned by the higher court.

The Bombay High Court had initially reversed the special court’s order on September 27, after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) contested the decision, citing concerns over Mukerjea leaving the country. The high court underscored that Mukerjea, a British national, claimed the travel was necessary to manage financial affairs and execute documents pertinent to her bank accounts in the UK and Spain. The court suggested that she could alternatively manage these affairs from India, with assistance from the respective embassies.

Mukerjea, who was arrested in August 2015 following the revelation of her daughter’s murder, was granted bail by the Supreme Court in May 2022. She has consistently denied involvement in the crime.

The Sheena Bora murder case captured national attention when it was disclosed that Sheena, 24, was allegedly killed by her mother in April 2012. The prosecution asserts that Sheena was strangled in Mumbai by Mukerjea, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna. According to the case details, they later disposed of Bora’s body by burning it in a forest in Raigad district. The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai, arrested in a separate arms case, confessed to his involvement during police interrogation.
