The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) hosted a farewell ceremony on November 8, 2024, to honour Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. DY Chandrachud, who will demit office on November 10. Justice Chandrachud, who served as the 50th Chief Justice of India, was sworn in on November 9, 2022, and his tenure has been marked by landmark judgments and a commitment to constitutional values.
Kapil Sibal’s Address
SCBA President and senior advocate Kapil Sibal took the dais to deliver an emotive tribute, reflecting on Justice Chandrachud’s contributions and legacy. Sibal began by pondering the benchmarks for evaluating a judge’s journey, emphasizing that perfection and truth are relative concepts.
“When you have to judge the journey of any judge, what is the benchmark? Perfection and truth are relative. You have to judge on the basis of the times in which we live,” he said.
Sibal lauded Justice Chandrachud’s ability to surpass the towering legacy of his father, Justice YV Chandrachud, who served as CJI for a record seven years and 14 days. “You outpaced him, judge,” Sibal remarked, praising his dedication to safeguarding life, liberty, and equality before the law.
Celebrating a Trailblazing Tenure
Sibal highlighted key attributes of Justice Chandrachud’s judicial approach, particularly his fearless handling of complex issues and his commitment to protecting fundamental rights.
“Life and liberty are the most important attributes of a person. Nobody can be deprived, except in accordance with law. You will be remembered for your commitment to these principles and for furthering the cause of equality,” he stated.
The SCBA President described Justice Chandrachud as a trailblazer in disability rights and lauded his openness to criticism. “You allowed people to criticize you. What can be braver than that?” Sibal noted, emphasizing the courage and inclusivity that characterized Justice Chandrachud’s tenure.
Sibal’s remarks also touched upon the broader legacy of the judiciary. “The court is remembered by the work that judges do to fulfill constitutional duties. Legacy of any judge is measured by how they have sought to safeguard citizens’ rights. In that regard, it is beyond doubt that CJI rendered phenomenal judgments,” he asserted.
A Poetic Farewell
Concluding his address with a personal touch, Sibal recited a poem he had written in honour of the outgoing Chief Justice, encapsulating the respect and admiration shared by the legal fraternity.
Justice Chandrachud’s tenure, marked by bold decisions and a forward-thinking approach, has left an indelible mark on India’s judiciary. As he steps down, the legal community fondly bids farewell, celebrating his contributions to the nation and the Constitution.
