Supreme Court Urges to Keep Gods Out of Politics Amidst Tirupati Laddu Controversy

In the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged use of contaminated ghee in Tirupati laddus, the Supreme Court on Monday emphasized the need to exclude deities from political disputes. The court’s plea came while addressing allegations that animal fat was used in the preparation of these sacred offerings, a claim that has sparked significant political and religious uproar.

Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, presiding over the case, questioned the necessity of public statements on the issue when an investigation was already in progress. “At least, we expect the Gods to be kept away from politics,” the bench stated, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding religious practices.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, underscored the importance of faith in the discussion, asserting that the use of contaminated ghee in such a context was wholly unacceptable. The court is considering several petitions that demand a thorough investigation into the allegations, which first came to light following claims by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. He alleged earlier this month that the previous administration under Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy used animal fat in the laddus, inciting a widespread controversy.

The YSR Congress Party has retaliated, accusing Naidu of propagating “heinous allegations” for political advantage.
