Supreme Court Reprimands Lawyer for Aggressive Tone in Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case

In a recent Supreme Court hearing concerning the distressing rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, tensions flared as the court reprimanded a lawyer for his inappropriate conduct. The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, criticized advocate Koustav Bagchi for his aggressive tone during the proceedings.

During the session, Chief Justice Chandrachud sternly addressed Bagchi, noting his behavior over the past two hours. “Don’t raise your voice, lower your pitch. You are addressing three judges of the Supreme Court and not the views of the YouTube who are watching the proceedings live,” the Chief Justice remarked, highlighting the decorum expected within the courtroom.

The incident occurred as the bench, which also includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, was engaging with the West Bengal government’s representation. They discussed measures to ensure that no punitive actions would be taken against the protesting doctors who agreed to resume duties by the set deadline of 5 p.m. the following day. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the state government, reassured the court of compliance.

However, the hearing took a tense turn when Bagchi interjected during a dialogue between the bench and Sibal, leading to the Chief Justice’s reprimand.
