AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has approached the Supreme Court challenging the manner in which the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being carried out. The Court on Wednesday agreed to take up his petition along with other pending cases concerning the revision exercise.
Advocate Nizamuddin Pasha, representing Owaisi, mentioned the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi. He requested that the petition be listed with similar cases scheduled for hearing on Thursday.
Pasha informed the bench that Owaisi’s challenge specifically concerned the way the electoral roll revision exercise was being conducted. He also submitted that the memo accompanying the listing request contained references to the related petitions already pending before the Court.
The bench, headed by CJI Surya Kant, indicated that it would examine the request and the details of the connected matters.
Owaisi’s petition adds to the legal challenges surrounding the SIR exercise, particularly allegations concerning the deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and 10 other prominent opposition leaders have also approached the Supreme Court raising allegations of irregularities in the SIR process and associated electoral procedures.
With several petitions now pending, the Supreme Court is set to consider the challenges relating to the conduct of the electoral roll revision exercise.
