PM Modi’s Light-Hearted Remark Elicits Smile from Chief Justice Chandrachud

During a national conference of the district judiciary at the Supreme Court in Delhi on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his characteristic style, remarked, “You all are so serious that it makes me feel this ceremony is quite solemn too.” This comment brought a smile to the face of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who was present on stage.

Prime Minister Modi made this comment while acknowledging the judiciary’s serious responsibility. He emphasized the deep respect the judiciary commands among the citizens of India, stating, “The people of India have never distrusted the Supreme Court or the judiciary. Therefore, these 75 years of the Supreme Court augment the pride of India as the mother of democracy. These 75 years are not just the journey of an institution. It is the journey of India’s Constitution and constitutional values—it’s the journey towards a more mature democracy.” He concluded with a resonant “Satyamev Jayate-Nanritam!”

Highlighting the achievements and efforts in judicial reforms, Modi pointed out the significant investments made over the past decade to eliminate delays in justice delivery. “In the last 10 years, about 8,000 crore rupees have been spent on the development of judicial infrastructure, which accounts for 75 percent of the total amount spent in the last 25 years,” he noted.

The Prime Minister also addressed serious social concerns, such as violence against women and child safety. “The nation has enacted several stringent laws for the protection of women, but there is a need to activate these more effectively. The faster the judgements are delivered in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater the sense of security the half population will feel,” he explained.
