In a recent troubling development, Bihar has witnessed the collapse of nine bridges within the past fifteen days, prompting a petition in the Supreme Court. The plea seeks a directive for the Bihar government to conduct a high-level investigation into all existing and under-construction bridges across the state. The urgency of this matter was highlighted by recent incidents, including the collapse of two bridges in Siwan district and one in Saran on Wednesday.
The petition, filed by lawyer Brajesh Singh, emphasizes the need for immediate attention to the recurring incidents of bridge failures in the state. The petitioner highlighted that in the last two years, three major under-construction bridges, among others, have collapsed, resulting in several fatalities and injuries. The plea calls for swift action to prevent such incidents in the future by addressing government negligence and the corrupt nexus of contractors.
The situation is particularly alarming in Bihar, one of the most flood-prone regions in the country. The state, with 68,800 square kilometers of flood-prone area, represents 73 percent of its total geographical area. This scenario underscores the need for the Supreme Court to intervene urgently.
