Former Cop Sachin Waze Appeals to Bombay HC for Release from Jail in Corruption Case

Dismissed police officer Sachin Waze has approached the Bombay High Court with a writ petition seeking his release from jail in a high-profile corruption case. In this case, he had turned approver in June 2022. The court, comprising Justices N R Borkar and Somasekhar Sundaresan, issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently investigating the allegations, and sought its response by June 14.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, also implicated in this case, is currently out on bail. The controversy deepened following allegations by ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, claiming that Deshmukh had instructed police officers to extort over Rs 100 crore monthly from local businesses during his tenure as Home Minister.

In his handwritten petition, Waze stated that despite his cooperation with the investigations and full disclosure of the events he was aware of, his conditional pardon as an approver was not fully honored. He described how his career as a distinguished police officer deteriorated due to “certain undue circumstances,” leading to his suspension and subsequent unlawful activities under pressure from Deshmukh.

Currently held at Taloja Central Prison in Navi Mumbai, Waze is also facing charges in a money laundering case and is connected to the Antilia bomb scare and the murder of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran. Arrested in March 2021 by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Waze’s legal battles continue as he seeks reprieve through the judicial system.
