Supreme Court Criticizes IMA President for Disrespectful Comments, Refuses to Accept Apology

The Supreme Court has taken a strong stance against Dr. R V Ashokan, President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), for his remarks in a media interview concerning the ongoing legal case against Patanjali Ayurved Limited. A bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah criticized Dr. Ashokan for mocking the court during his interview, stating, “You cannot sit on a sofa and mock the court through the press.”

During the session, Justice Kohli emphasized the importance of self-restraint in exercising free speech, especially when one is involved in a pending case where the IMA itself is a petitioner. The court expressed disappointment in Dr. Ashokan’s demeanor and his lack of prudence given his significant experience and leadership position within the IMA.

The bench sternly reminded Dr. Ashokan that such conduct was not easily forgivable, questioning why he chose to comment on a pending matter, potentially prejudicing the case. Despite Dr. Ashokan’s unconditional apology and plea for forgiveness, the court was not convinced of its sincerity, stating that his actions did not seem heartfelt.

Justice Amanullah labeled the remarks as “very unfortunate” and inappropriate for someone in Dr. Ashokan’s position, especially given the allegations against Patanjali of misleading the public and defaming allopathy.

The court highlighted that its leniency should not be taken for granted, underscoring that no one could escape accountability by merely issuing apologies.
