New Regulations to Combat Deepfakes in 10 Days, Says Indian Govt

The Indian government has announced plans to introduce new regulations targeting the spread of deepfake content within the next 10 days. Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the regulations will focus on four key areas: detection, prevention, reporting, and public awareness.

Following meetings with stakeholders, including representatives from social media platforms and experts in artificial intelligence, Vaishnaw stated that the government will also explore imposing penalties on both the creators and platforms hosting deepfakes. Until the regulations are finalized, social media companies have pledged to take measures to limit the spread of deepfakes.

The government intends to convene another meeting with stakeholders next month to discuss the issue further and seek public feedback on the new regulations. Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of addressing deepfakes, describing them as a threat to democracy and trust in society.
