A first-time flyer was recently arrested at Bengaluru airport after being caught smoking a bidi in midair.
The passenger, identified as Praveen Kumar, was charged with endangering the lives of other passengers.
He did, however, tell the police that he was unaware of the aviation rules and thought it would be similar to smoking in a train washroom, which he admitted to doing on a regular basis.
Kumar boarded the plane in Ahmedabad on Tuesday before being caught smoking in the lavatory by the cabin crew.
According to officials, the flight attendants reacted quickly and detained him. He was arrested when he arrived at Kempegowda International Airport.
Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is prohibited on Indian flights, according to The Aircraft Rules of 1937. In recent days, however, a slew of violations have been reported across the country.
