On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud stated that we(supreme Court) should send a message to the bar that the Apex Court will not adjourn the matter for nothing.
This statement was made when an SLP in which a notice was issued in 2017 came up for hearing before the Court, but the AOR for the petitioner sought an adjournment.
Justice Chandrachud remarked that he read the matter that very morning, and even his brother judge came prepared.
However, the AOR submitted that he does not even have a copy of the SLP and requested the Court to adjourn the matter one day.
However, Justice Shah was not impressed and that the AOR had filed his Vakalatnama and therefore, it was his problem.
Justice Chandrachud further stated that notice was issued in 2017 and asked the AOR to take a copy from respondents’ counsel and begin arguments; otherwise, they will dismiss the matter for want of prosecution. He further stated that matters would be adjourned for nothing, and as the Court has accommodated the matter, then the case should be heard.
Counsel for the respondents also prayed for an adjournment by stating that he underwent surgery recently. Justice Chandrachud replied that the counsel should relax, but they will hear the petitioner’s argument.
Lastly, the Court directed the petitioner’s counsel to prepare and argue his case after the successive item is over.
