On Wednesday, the Mumbai police told the Bombay High Court that it had unearthed more evidence against Republic TV in the TRP scam case. Mumbai police also sought Court’s permission to take coercive action against the accused.
Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal( Counsel for Mumbai Police) agreed to refrain from taking coercive action till 15th January because Counsel for one of the accused(ARG Media) sought adjournment citing a medical emergency. Mr Sibal also submitted that they(Mumbai Police) had found new evidence through an investigation conducted with BARC.
The counsel also submitted that a Mumbai Magistrate refused to grant bail to former CEO of BARC Mr Partho Dasgupta observing that Partho used his position to manipulate the TRPs. Mr Sibal told the Court that he would submit a status report by the next date of hearing.
FIR in the TRP scam case was filed in October, and in November Mumbai Police submitted a 1400 page charge sheet and accused six tv channels of paying bribes to manipulate TRPs.
Arnab Goswami of Republic TV moved the High Court to restrain Mumbai Police from taking any action against him.
Till now, the Mumbai police has arrested the CEO of Republic TV who managed to secure bail later. Police also sought to arrest CPO of the channel, but another Court granted her bail.
On 16.12.2020, Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal assured the Court that his client(Mumbai Police) would not take any coercive action against ARG Outlier Media(parent company of Republic TV) and Goswami.
