Uttarakhand High Court Defers Hearing on Uniform Civil Code Challenges

The Uttarakhand High Court has postponed the hearing of several petitions challenging the provisions of the uniform civil code (UCC), which was implemented in the state starting January. The hearing, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was deferred to April 22 after the state government requested additional time to file a counter affidavit.

The matter is set before the division bench consisting of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra. In total, eleven petitions will be reviewed at the next hearing, addressing the contentious aspects of Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code. Among the challenged provisions are those mandating the registration of live-in relationships and concerns raised about the insensitivity towards the marriage customs of Muslim, Parsi, and other communities.

The implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand has sparked significant legal and public discourse, focusing on its implications for various cultural and religious practices in the state. The upcoming hearing is anticipated to address these complex issues, as the court weighs the legality and fairness of the newly implemented code.
