Uttarakhand High Court Considers Technological Interventions Amid Rising Road Accident Concerns

The Uttarakhand High Court has taken a serious stance on the escalating issue of road accidents attributed to over speeding vehicles, particularly by younger drivers, in the state’s hilly regions.

During a session on Thursday, the court deliberated on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) which highlighted the prevalent risks posed by drivers between the ages of 18 and 25, who often indulge in high-speed driving as a thrill-seeking activity. The PIL was initiated by Advocate Lalit Miglani, who pointed out the lethal combination of youthful indiscretion and powerful modern vehicles equipped with advanced technology.

Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar and Justice Ashish Naithani, who preside over the division bench, expressed profound concern over the matter. They have summoned the IG Traffic of Garhwal to appear in person for the next hearing scheduled for February 20, indicating the urgency and gravity of the issue.

One innovative solution proposed in the court involves the installation of sensors along roads that could detect when vehicles exceed speed limits. These sensors would not only notify the family of the driver but also alert the local police station, enabling immediate legal action through the issuance of challans.

The PIL also suggests a revision in the legal driving age for vehicles with engine capacities between 1000 to 2000 CC to 25 years. This recommendation draws parallels to the existing regulation that allows teenagers aged 16 to 18 to operate vehicles up to 50 CC.
