Supreme Court Round-Up for April 25

Important cases heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, April 25:

* SC issued notices to the Delhi Police and others on a plea by seven women wrestlers seeking an FIR against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, saying the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by them are “serious” and require its consideration.

* SC said undisputedly Parliament has the legislative power over issues raised in pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage and pondered over about the “interstices” left open for it to exercise power besides the extent it can go to decide them.

* SC said that Karnataka’s earlier regime granting four per cent reservation for Muslims in 2B category of the ‘Other Backward Castes’ will continue to hold field till May 9.

* SC said that state machinery must take responsibility and protect the rights and liberties of its citizens guaranteed under the constitution.

* The fourth day of hearing in SC on a batch of pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage witnessed two members of the five-judge Constitution bench joining the proceedings virtually.

* A group of over 400 parents has written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, heading a bench hearing the pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage, urging that their LGBTQIA++ wards be granted the right to “marriage equality”.
