The Supreme Court of India has announced the reconstitution of its Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), appointing Justice B V Nagarathna as the chairperson of the newly formed 11-member panel.
The committee’s lineup features a blend of judicial and legal expertise alongside representatives from the academic sector. Along with Justice Nagarathna, the panel includes Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and Sujata Singh, who serves as the Officer on Special Duty (Registrar). The committee is further strengthened by the inclusion of senior advocates Menaka Guruswamy, Liz Mathew, and Bansuri Swaraj.
Advocates Nina Gupta, Soumyajit Pani, and Sakshi Banga are also part of the committee, contributing their legal acumen to the group. The panel is rounded out by Madhu Chauhan from the Supreme Court Bar Clerks’ Association and Dr. Leni Chaudhuri, Executive Director at the University of Chicago Centre in India Pvt. Ltd, nominated by the Chief Justice of India.
The GSICC is tasked with addressing issues related to gender sensitivity within the judiciary. Its functions include the evaluation of complaints and the implementation of policies designed to ensure a safe and respectful working environment for all court employees, regardless of gender. The committee’s formation comes at a crucial time as institutions across India intensify efforts to promote gender equality and safeguard the rights and dignity of individuals within the legal profession.
