Supreme Court Orders Removal of Photos and Videos of Deceased Kolkata Doctor

The Supreme Court has directed the immediate removal of all pictures and videos disclosing the identity and body of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. During a hearing on the case, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed deep concern over the circulation of the victim’s identity and images, which violates her privacy.

The court stated, “We are deeply concerned that the victim’s name and photographs have been circulated widely in the media. This is extremely concerning and violates the dignity of the young doctor who lost her life”.

The bench criticized the widespread publication of sensitive details, emphasizing that such actions go against legal and ethical standards for protecting victims’ privacy. It called for immediate action to remove all identifying information from public platforms.

Additionally, the Supreme Court has formed a 10-member National Task Force to develop safety protocols for doctors in the workplace. The court also directed the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation by Thursday.

This order comes as part of the court’s broader examination of the case, which has sparked nationwide protests and calls for improved security measures for healthcare workers.
