In a recent judgment, the Supreme Court of India has refused to entertain a petition that sought to challenge the decision to re-conduct the UGC-NET examination scheduled for August 21st. The plea was dismissed on Monday, emphasizing the necessity to avoid casting uncertainty on the future of nearly 9 lakh candidates.
The petitioners had contested the annulment of the UGC-NET exam originally held on June 18th, which was cancelled due to discrepancies reported shortly after. They demanded a stay on the re-conduct of the exam until a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was complete. However, the top court highlighted that more than two months had passed since the decision to cancel and reschedule the exam, and deliberating on the plea would only propagate uncertainty and chaos among students.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, leading a bench that also included Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, remarked, “Let’s let the exam proceed on August 21st, to maintain certainty for the students. We do not live in a perfect world.”
