Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Permanent Appointment of Justice Subhendu Samanta to Calcutta High Court

In a recent development aimed at addressing judicial vacancies, the Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended the appointment of Justice Subhendu Samanta, currently serving as an additional judge, as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court.

In an official statement, the Collegium said,

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on April 15, 2025 has approved the proposal for appointment of Shri Justice Subhendu Samanta, Additional Judge as Permanent Judge in the High Court at Calcutta.”

Justice Samanta was appointed as an additional judge on May 18, 2022. Born on November 25, 1971, he has served in the Calcutta High Court for nearly three years, presiding over a range of civil and criminal matters.

As of April 1, 2025, the Calcutta High Court has been functioning with only 45 judges against its sanctioned strength of 72, highlighting a significant shortfall of 27 judges. The Collegium’s recommendation is part of an ongoing effort to fill vacancies across the higher judiciary and improve the efficiency of court proceedings.
