In a recent meeting held on February 5, the Supreme Court Collegium announced its recommendation to appoint two esteemed judicial officers as judges of the Delhi High Court. The nominees, Renu Bhatnagar and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta, have been selected to fill some of the vacancies in the court, which is currently operating significantly under its sanctioned strength.
As of February 1, the Delhi High Court is functioning with only 38 judges out of a total sanctioned strength of 60, leaving 22 positions vacant. The elevation of Bhatnagar and Gupta is seen as a crucial step towards addressing this shortfall and enhancing the judicial capacity of the high court.
The recommendation by the Collegium was made public today, signaling transparency and the continuation of the judiciary’s efforts to maintain an efficient legal system. The appointments are now pending approval by the government, which will conduct its due diligence before the final swearing-in of the recommended individuals.
