The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) hosted a farewell ceremony on November 8, 2024, to honour Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. DY Chandrachud, who will demit office on November 10. Justice Chandrachud, who served as the 50th Chief Justice of India, was sworn in on November 9, 2022, and his tenure has been marked by landmark judgments and a commitment to constitutional values.

Celebrating a Trailblazing Tenure

Sibal highlighted key attributes of Justice Chandrachud’s judicial approach, particularly his fearless handling of complex issues and his commitment to protecting fundamental rights.

“Life and liberty are the most important attributes of a person. Nobody can be deprived, except in accordance with law. You will be remembered for your commitment to these principles and for furthering the cause of equality,” he stated.

The SCBA President described Justice Chandrachud as a trailblazer in disability rights and lauded his openness to criticism. “You allowed people to criticize you. What can be braver than that?” Sibal noted, emphasizing the courage and inclusivity that characterized Justice Chandrachud’s tenure.

Sibal’s remarks also touched upon the broader legacy of the judiciary. “The court is remembered by the work that judges do to fulfill constitutional duties. Legacy of any judge is measured by how they have sought to safeguard citizens’ rights. In that regard, it is beyond doubt that CJI rendered phenomenal judgments,” he asserted.
