In a significant observation raising concerns about the impartiality of investigative agencies, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court’s decision to quash proceedings against BM Parvati, wife of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) case.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, alongside Justice K Vinod Chandran, upheld the High Court’s order and delivered strong remarks questioning the ED’s conduct, particularly in politically sensitive matters.
“Let political battles be fought before the electorate. Why are you being used?” the Chief Justice remarked during the hearing, cautioning the agency against becoming a tool in political rivalries.

Addressing Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, who appeared for the ED, the CJI warned, “Mr Raju, please don’t compel us to open our mouths. Otherwise, we will be forced to make some harsh comments about the ED. Unfortunately, I have some experience in Maharashtra. Don’t perpetuate this violence across the country.”
The case against BM Parvati was linked to alleged irregularities in MUDA land allotments. The Karnataka High Court had earlier quashed the proceedings, prompting the ED to approach the apex court in appeal.
